Are clean windows more energy efficient?

With the current cost of living crisis, all of us are looking for ways to save money and keep energy bills as low as possible. Windows can be responsible for as much as 30% of the energy inefficiency of a domestic property, so they are a good area to focus on when looking for energetic savings. Luckily, something as simple as keeping your windows clean can help to improve the energy efficiency of your house, whilst also making it more attractive to look at.

One main way that clean windows contribute to greater energy efficiency is that they allow more sunlight in. letting strong sunlight into the house is a great way to naturally assist your heating, and by keeping the windows clean, you maximise the extent to which this is true. When windows are dirty, a significant proportion of light can be blocked from entering your house, meaning that your heating has to work harder to make up for this lost energy.

Secondly, keeping the windows clean can ensure that the frames stay in good condition, minimising the change of cracks or other damage which could herm their efficiency. The dirt which accumulates on windows often contains pollutants which can cause the plastic of the window frames to become brittle and crack more easily. If this happens, then cold air will be able to enter your house through the cracks, reducing your overall efficiency, and also reducing the degree of noise insulation that the window provides.
