Health and safety standards for high-rise window cleaning in the UK

When it comes to cleaning windows on high rise buildings, there are health and safety standards in place to protect the workers as well as the general public. Due to the nature of this type of work involving heights and other risks, there are strict safety rules and regulations which must be followed at all times. The Health and Safety Executive, also known as HSE, ensure employers and their workers follow these rules to keep everyone safe.

One of the rules set out is that work at height should be avoided wherever possible. This means that of the windows can be cleaned from inside of the building then this would be the preferred option to take before considering working from a height. However, if this not possible, then the employer must find the safest access point and method which include the likes of abseiling or mobile platforms.

All employers must ensure that their workers are full trained in using the safety equipment. This can include things like harnesses and ropes. Personal protective equipment is also essential for this type of work where you would be required to wear helmets, gloves, suitable footwear, which needs to be regularly inspected and replaced if worn or damaged.

Employers must check everything is safe and secure before carrying out the work. This includes checking anchor points on buildings meet safety standards. As part of the training, workers will also be trained to recognise hazards like weather changes, loose fixtures etc. The weather can be a major factor in whether the work can go ahead or not. However, careful planning and risk assessment will ensure the job is carried out as safely as possible.
